We’re back up! Now, about those missing thumbnails…

October 21st, 2008 by gculliss

We’re back up and running.  We had to re-format a drive and re-load our thumbnail images, some of which were lost.  As such, we’ll be updating the system with new thumbnails as we pull them from the hundreds of sources across the web that have videos listed at Gawkk.  As always, please feel free to use our “report” function to let us know if you see anything out of order with a video or channel.

Recovering from Hard Drive Failure

October 20th, 2008 by gculliss

Gawkk is down at the moment as we recover from a hard drive failure.  We’re in the process of swapping out the drive and getting the machine back up.  We run RAID on our boxes, but a corrupt file system has prevented us from simply mirroring a new disk.

Please stay tuned…

Tweet Your Gawkk Activity with Twitter

May 30th, 2008 by gculliss

Gawkk now supports the automatic posting of your Gawkk activity news feed items to Twitter.

Tweet Your Gawkk Activity with Twitter

To start tweeting your Gawkk activity to your Twitter friends and followers, simply click the Configure Twitter Access link on your profile edit page, and then enter your Twitter login.  Gawkk will remember your login (until you tell it to forget them) and then automatically Tweet each item in your activity news feed in real-time.

It’s a cool way to let people know about the videos that you save or submit, and to follow your friends’ activity on Gawkk as well. Kudos to our rock star developer and Gawkk team member, Thomas (tsmango), for brilliantly implementing this feature in just a couple of hours.

Oh, by the way, you can follow me on Twitter at twitter.com/gculliss and Thomas at twitter.com/tsmango.  Enjoy!

MySpace Application, Coming Soon…

May 15th, 2008 by gculliss

We’ve been working hard the past few weeks on our MySpace application and are hoping to get it approved any day (or minute?) now. It’s called Gawkk TV and it allows you to do almost everything you can do at the main Gawkk site, but all from within the MySpace site.

Gawkk MySpace App - Gawkk TV

The application is built on the MySpace platform with the OpenSocial API.  The application allows you to easily discover and share videos with your existing friends on MySpace by leveraging the MySpace social graph of your friends.

Welcome to Gawkk!

December 17th, 2007 by gculliss

Greetings to all of our new members!

As you know, Gawkk is the place where you can discover and share great videos from around the web. Here’s a quick guide to the major features and functions that you’ll want to know to get started using Gawkk:

Channels

All videos on the site are classified into thousands of channels on various topics such as TV shows, movies, celebrities, comedians and more. You can subscribe to these channels simply by clicking the “subscribe” button next to the channel icon.

View and subscribe to thousands of Gawkk channels

All channels are updated daily, so when you subscribe to a channel new videos added to the channel will automatically be shown on your personalized home page whenever you visit Gawkk. You can browse and subscribe to our many great channels simply by visiting the channels tab from anywhere on the site.

Your Own Personal Channel

As a Gawkk member, you automatically get your own personal channel and can save videos to it by submitting a link to the video or simply by clicking the “save” button next to any video on the site.

Your own Personal Channel at Gawkk

Your friends can then subscribe to your channel to automatically receive the great videos you saved to your channel whenever they visit the site. Similarly, you can also subscribe to your friends channels to see all of the great videos they find and save as well.

Saving Videos

Whenever you save a video, it’s added to your personal channel. In addition, the video itself gets a vote of confidence that’s reflected in the total number of saves that it has received.

Videos that get enough saves are promoted to being popular videos

Videos that receive enough saves will be promoted to the “popular” video listings throughout the site and on the home page. Looking at the popular videos section is a great way to find the videos that Gawkk members are saving and sharing right now.

Sharing Your Channel

You can also share your channel with the rest of the world through a Gawkk widget that you can easily place on your blog or social networking profile. The Gawkk Widget makes it easy to share the great videos you find with your friends and the world by showing the most-recent videos that you’ve saved to your channel.

Gawkk Widget

If you have a blog or social networking profile, you can easily add a Gawkk Widget by visiting www.gawkk.com/share/sidebar-player.

Making Friends

Gawkk is more interesting and fun when you have more friends on the site. You can make friends simply by clicking the “Add Friend” link next to a person’s profile page. Once you add someone as a friend, you’ll be able to see the videos that they save to their channel on your personalized home page.

Click \

Do you have a ton of friends around the web? You can easily invite all of your friends at once through our simple email invitation page at www.gawkk.com/members/find.

Sharing Videos

Once you’re a Gawkk member, you can easily share any of the great videos you find on Gawkk simply by clicking the “Share” link in the video listing. You can then select any of your friends to send them the video, or you can enter an email address and provide a personalized message. Your friends will then receive an email letting them know about the great video you found for them.

Videos by Category

The “Videos” tab allows you to view videos by various categories across all channels. Simply select one of the categories from the left-hand menu to filter videos by category.

View Videos by Category Across all Channels on Gawkk

When viewing videos this way, you’ll see two columns of videos for each category: the popular videos on the left and the newest videos on the right. The newest videos are the most-recent videos imported into Gawkk, while the popular videos are those that have received enough saves to become popular. Popular videos from all categories are also featured prominently in the left column on the home page.

Power to the People!

Since Gawkk is a community-driven site, you can always submit a video link through our submit tab or by using the Gawkk browser button available at www.gawkk.com/buttons. Also, if you see anything improper about a video, please let us know by clicking the “report” link and selecting one of the errors listed in the menu.

Since we are in beta, we’ll be adding more features based on your feedback so be sure to contact us to let us know what you think!

Thanks, and we look forward to hearing your thoughts!

The Gawkk Team
